FEZ

Fès is the third biggest city of Morocco, after Casablanca and Rabat, with a population of 1.008.782 inhabitants. It is one of the four - imperial cities (with Marrakech, Meknes and Rabat) It possesses the largest Médina of the world. The name of the city would come from a discovered pickaxe (Arab: fa's), at the site of the first foundations. In 818, 800 Andalusian families expelled by the Omeyyades of the Spanish city of Cordova, came there to settle. Some time later 2000 families came from Kairouan to populate also the city. Located close to the average Atlas, Fez profited from a Mediterranean climate. Tourism did not cease developing (a million of visitors per annum).
